This place is not only a gorgeous and spacious apartment in a very well cared for manoir, but it is incredibly peaceful too! The main house is the family home of the owner, and it's clear they have a lot of love for the place!

This was the first place we stayed during our French road trip in late August, and it definitely set us up for a wonderful trip!

From a historical point of view, this building one housed a Nazi Headquarters that was quickly evacuated by the occupiers after the D-Day Landings on 6th June 1944.

It would be remiss of me not to mention the renowned Dutch Painter, Rembrandt.

Alas, we didn’t get opt the Rembrandt Museum when we visited (next time hopefully), so we had to settle with this gorgeous statue of the man himself in Rembrandt Square!
.
Rembrandt was born in Leiden in 1606 and he moved to Amsterdam in 1631 where he quickly gained favour and popularity with the city’s wealthy merchants. He is best known for the painting technique called “chiaroscuro”, a unique way of painting light and shadow. This later became a hallmark of his painting style.
.
His most famous works include “Girl with a Pearl Earring” and “The Night Watch”.
.

Rembrandt Square was renamed in 1876 to honour the Dutch Artist! It was originally called the Botermarkt (Butter Market) because it was where dairy products were once traded!

Recognise this???

Die hard James Bond fans might recognise this bridge as the “Skinny Bridge” that was featured in the 1971 James Bond film, Diamonds Are Forever, starring Seán Connery as 007.
.
You can see it in the scene where tourists are on a canal cruise in Amsterdam and just before they see a baddie (in this case an elderly woman who smuggles diamonds) pulled out of the canal, they pass this bridge.
.
The film tells the story that the bridge was built by two sisters, who lived on opposite sides of the canal, who wanted to see each other every day, so they decided to build a bridge. The story goes that they ran out of money and that’s why it was only a narrow bridge!
.
True or not, I think it’s a lovely story. The bridge building, not the diamond smuggling. Although Diamonds Are Forever was a pretty good Bond Film too!
.

Do not miss this stunning AirBnB minutes outside the beautiful town of Bayeux in the heart of Normandy!

This place is not only a gorgeous and spacious apartment in a very well cared for manoir, but it is incredibly peaceful too! The main house is the family home of the owner, and it's clear they have a lot of love for the place!
.
This was the first place we stayed during our French road trip in late August, and it definitely set us up for a wonderful trip!
.
From a historical point of view, this building one housed a Nazi Headquarters that was quickly evacuated by the occupiers after the D-Day Landings on 6th June 1944.

Construction of Amsterdam’s oldest surviving bui

Construction of Amsterdam’s oldest surviving building, the Dutch Gothic Oude Kerk (Old Church), started around 1306. It was originally a Catholic church dedicated to St. Nicholas.

It was changed into a Protestant church in 1578 during the Protestant Reformation. Many of the ornate Catholic decorations and altars were either removed and repurposed or destroyed.
.
Over the centuries, the Oude Kerk has played host to baptisms, weddings and funerals of the Dutch Royal Family, the House of Orange-Nassau. It has also, and continues to play host to cultural events, concerts, lectures and exhibitions on a regular basis.
.
The Oude Kerk is also a prominent landmark, as well as a place of worship. Undeniably, its location, in the heart of the Red Light District adds very much to its unique character!
.
It is certainly a testament to the city’s enduring history!
.
Tickets cost €15, or they’re FREE with the I Amsterdam City Card! There may be a surcharge during some temporary exhibitions.
